Review: Last year on June 26, Sardaarji released worldwide and created history and went on to shatter all the records in Punjabi Cinema for a live action feature film in Punjabi Cinema. This year, the makers decided to make another film in the super hit ‘Sardaarji’ series and hired the same team which made the last film a blockbuster. Dheeraj Rattan as writer, Rohit Jugraj as director, Music by Jatinder Shah and above all Diljit Dosanjh as ‘Sardaarji’ in the lead role.
Firstly, Sardaarji 2 has been written by Dheeraj Rattan and the film has got a storyline which not only provides comic relief in this heating month of June but also sends out a strong message. The story talks about the hardships being faced by a farmer in the present day scenario in Punjab and how youth is forced to shed their homes and flee to foreign shores to earn their living. Screenplay also by Dheeraj Rattan is illogical in places but given that it’s a film and in films things always seem to be larger than life.
You just cannot question what is happening but rather sit back and watch the events take place. The writer has cleverly used the situations to fit all 6 songs in the screenplay and thankfully there is a good amount of gap in between all the songs. Coming to the dialogues, they’ve been penned by Jatinder Lall who won the PTC Award this year for the first film in the Sardaarji series, so do I need to say more about the man who has written the dialogues. No, I don’t. His dialogues were good and fitted well in the screenplay.
Coming to Rohit Jugraj’s direction, Rohit has done a fine job in making this film. And he’s got equal support from the producers as well in terms of budget, locations, star cast, etc… I must congratulate White Hill for producing such an expensive project and leaving no stone unturned in making this project. Coming to Rohit’s direction, Rohit did fine to make this film. It was technically very sound, but frankly I expected more from Rohit given his talent as a filmmaker.
Coming to the performances, the film belonged to one man – DILJIT DOSANJH. His astonishing performance put life into this run-of-the-mill screenplay. His portrayal of Jaggi Khoo Wala a.k.a. Safal Kissan was nothing short of par excellence. He was good with his emotions where they were required, comic timing needs no explanations, we all know how good it is, and he got muscles man. His 6 pack abs looked astonishing garnering an overwhelming response from the crowd inside the theater. Monica Gill sees her 3rd film being released in a span of 91 days. Very rare feat achieved here for a Punjabi actress. She dubbed her lines herself for the first time in 3 films, and she was all right in the film. Bearable is the right word actually.
Coming to Sonam Bajwa, she was the one who set the temperatures roaring in the Air Conditioned theatre. She looked ultra glam doll in the film and basically it was her a trait of her character to look good. And she did it well. And both the actresses had their moments in the film but Diljit’s flawless performance saw the actresses being overshadowed by the colossus. Jaswinder Bhalla was refreshing. Yes, that’s the right word. It was a pleasure to see him as Pathan Chacha and I believe nobody could portray it better than him. Yashpal Sharma is a fabulous actor but in Hindi films. Either he needs to take Punjabi Cinema seriously or he can just refuse roles but please do not spoil roles sir, Please. Dev Sing Gill was loud, again. Someone please tell him this is not South Indian films.
Overall, Sardaarji 2 offers variety – Comedy, Drama, Message, Songs, Dancing. I expected more out of the film but I can surely say the audiences who like Diljit’s cinema won’t be disappointed. The family audiences, who happen to be the target audience of the film will be treated with something good to watch out for and its a clean film which can be enjoyed with whole family.
